Winter Is Coming… Legendary Style!

Tonight will be the longest night of the year, and tomorrow marks the official start of winter. Thus far in December, Legendary Games has been playing against type, releasing products ranging from our first family-friendly adventure Into the Feyweald to creepy psychics in Occult Character Codex: Occultists, to a slew of products suited to the sizzling sands of ancient empires, like Mythic Monsters: Egypt and THREE new Egyptian-themed adventures all rapidly approaching release. But make no mistake, WINTER IS COMING!

Zakhar - 7

While some of our product lines are approaching their conclusion, we are pleased to announce the advent of a new line of Adventure Path Plug-Ins ideally suited for the Witches of Winter AP as well as any campaign that ventures into the cold places of the world (or to other worlds entirely), especially those drawing up on the legends and lore of Eastern Europe (and a bit of Scandinavia thrown in as well). These Winter AP Plug-Ins will be kicking off in January with the latest entry in our fantastic Heroes series, the first in this line penned by a hand other than Legendary co-founder Neil Spicer. These Winter Heroes instead spring from the marvelous mind of Liz Courts! No stranger to LG, Liz laid out a number of our products in 2012, but this will mark her authorial debut, and we are delighted to bring her love for the subject matter and design skills to the table, along with an assortment of amazing artwork from Bob Greyvenstein, who also delivered the knockout designs you’ve seen in Metal Heroes and Nautical Heroes

Next in line, we’ll be bringing you the Treasury of Winter, a collection of marvelous magic items themed for the depths of winter. From cheery items like the candle-crown of holly, welcome wreath, and festive fox fur to the sinister howling horn and Krampus bag, you’ll find an assortment of items drawn from cultures that dwell in the boreal climes where summer is but a distant dream. Following that, Legendary Villains: Wicked Witches is slated to follow, and yet more to come. If you love the sight of falling snow and the howl of hungry wolves, it is time to celebrate. Winter is not just coming, the bleak midwinter is practically here!

A Legendary Beginning for new gamers!

As the year comes to a close, we are delighted to unveil several new product lines, the first of which is Legendary Beginnings, a set of adventures and products for (surprise!) beginning gamers. This includes friends or relatives who have never sat down to throw dice, but they are especially suited for younger gamers just starting out in the hobby. Our initial offering is on final approach, so let me introduce it for you! - Into the Feyweald (cover)

Into the Feyweald takes your heroes into a world of adventure in the realms of faerie! Guests at the fairy queen Pryozha’s celebration feast, the festivities are interrupted by the creepy, crawly spider-riders serving the wicked witches of the woods! You must take up the quest to find the hidden grove where Yaldira the witch works her dark magic, turning the forest sickly and rotten, battling her evil minions that menace the creatures of the wood. There, in the dark pits of her lair, you must stop her from awakening her cruel queen from her crystal tomb and save the woodland realm! This 1st-level adventure is suitable for a standard Pathfinder game or one using the boxed set for beginners.

Featuring the Legendary Games debut of Paris Crenshaw, who developed and playtested this adventure with his Girl Scout troop, Into the Feyweald is delightful romp through the fairy woods that will delight experienced games as well as newbies. Legendary Beginnings are immersive adventures that sacrifice none of the fun and richness you’ve come to expect from Pathfinder adventures by Legendary Games while taking a tone and artistic style that makes them suitable for all ages.

Into the Feyweald is in layout now, awaiting only the final maps, and should be available by next week. We hope you’ll be looking forward to more Legendary Beginnings for the new gamers in your family, friends, schools, youth groups, scout troops, and any new gamers looking for a fun and accessible adventure to give the hobby a try!

Relationships are about to get ULTIMATE!

Coming this Friday from Legendary Games are a pair of products that will be part of a new product line we are debuting: ULTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS! True, PC and NPC relationships have always been handled by roleplay, but there is also ample room for structure and rules to guide how to approach building a relationship with a character in the campaign. The underlying concept draws from the relationship rules introduced in the Jade Regent Adventure Path from Paizo Publishing, but refined by extensive play experience and expert rules analysis and development by one of the sharpest young minds in the game today, Mark Seifter! Check out what he has to say about this new venture!

A good RPG campaign, like any good story, needs conflict and antagonists to lend it immediacy and drama. But a campaign with pure conflicts, without allies, family, romances, and other connections to friendly characters, quickly grows stale. Much like Shakespeare’s comedic drunken porter scene in Macbeth released tension intentionally to strengthen the impact of the revelation of Duncan’s murder just after, so too can points of lower intensity spent with friendly NPCs increase the impact of the game’s dramatic high points. And sometimes, the relationships themselves can provide their own high points, their own drama, and powerful transformations that make a character more than just a set of statistics or an unrealistically uncaring avatar.

Ultimate Relationships contains a system for relationships that provides a meaningful progression and story for the significant NPCs your PCs might encounter in the course of a campaign, including secrets to uncover as the relationship progresses, and hurdles for the PC and the NPC to overcome together. Unlike other relationship systems that bottleneck on certain skills, often Diplomacy, Ultimate Relationships allows everyone to progress and reveal the NPC’s story at their own rate; it just might take some characters longer than others.

This product contains a set of core relationship rules for making these kinds of interactions between PCs and NPCs a rich and vibrant part of your campaign. They are suitable for use in any campaign, but for groups playing in the official published Adventure Paths we will also be releasing a series of modules featuring the core NPCs from those Adventure Paths, as well as new NPCs introduced in the respective Adventure Path Plug-Ins from Legendary Games. The first such product, Imperial Relationships, describes how to use these rules in the Far Eastern Adventure Path, including four relationship links, one each for the Caravan Master, Destined Empress, Elven Protector, and Mystic Seer, with further modules to come to further expand the available NPC relationships in that Adventure Path as well as others.

This product line begins in two parts but will be expanding further as we go along, but we are very excited about this new line and hope you enjoy all the possibilities it offers for your game. We’ll be previewing excerpts from Imperial Relationships tomorrow, so raise your glass and stay tuned! - Tavern

FANTASTIC FALL PREVIEWS #6: A shout-out to Legendary Ladies!

I’m not a video gamer, but this whole “GamerGate” thing has been making such waves in the waters of nerd-dom that I can’t help but notice the negativity that still lingers in many corners of our collective space around the role of women in traditionally male-centered hobbies. I’m also a sports fan, and there’s plenty to see in that arena (pun intended) to show that contemptible attitudes about women and their qualifications to contribute meaningfully and with excellence in those areas are hardly restricted to geek culture. There’s plenty of vitriol in a lot of places, and it sucks everywhere you find it. We are all here to have fun and do something we love and share it with others; why some people have such a problem with that is beyond me, but they do. When you think about what we can do about genderist trolls in the hobby, we hopefully more enlightened gamers and nerds who are delighted to game with and work with folks of every gender can try to raise the level of conversation on these issues. That’s often a losing proposition, as you’re never going to convince a troll that it’s wrong, but some folks more firmly in the trollish crosshairs may appreciate your shouts of support. But it’s not enough.

If the best revenge is living well, then the best counter to trollishness against women in the hobby business is to keep women living well in the hobby business. Publishers have an opportunity to be proactive in the people they work with to make a difference in the professional landscape of the hobby, both in the content they create and the people they hire. I often tell the story of how Julia Martin was the first person who hired me to do professional game work for Wizards of the Coast back in 2002. I loved her work on the Forgotten Realms deity books (she was very tickled when I referred to her as “THE Julia Martin”) and got to know her as a friend and fellow gamer playing in one another’s campaigns for years. Women have been around the business for a long time, and one need look no further than Lisa Stevens and her long career across multiple companies, culminating in the the last decade-plus running Paizo, Inc., where they’ve long been very intentional about inclusivity on the printed page and in their staff.

But what does that have to do with previews at Legendary Games?

Legendary Games was founded as a crew of all-star freelancers for Pathfinder, people who had written Adventure Paths and core rules hardbacks and Superstars, but it was never intended to be an all-boys club. We’ve had female artists and layout (hi Liz Courts) and a female Business Director in Rachel Ventura, but we had never quite managed to get a female author in print… until now. Not for lack of trying; we had several projects with talented folks where things just didn’t come together as we had planned, or had to be pushed back, but ifs and buts aside we are pleased to also announce that the recently released Pirate Codex features the able contributions of Ms. Linda Zayas-Palmer, with whom I’ve been acquainted for several years through PaizoCon, where I got to know her and her beau, Mark Seifter, and both impressed me with their talent and intelligence and love of gaming. She has recently started freelancing for “the golem,” and we talked about some projects that might be a great fit, and the Pirate Codex is the first of those to hit the shelves. It won’t be the last.

Now I don’t tell you this so that you’ll go buy the Pirate Codex because it’s got a female author on it. You should go buy the Pirate Codex because it’s AWESOME, and Linda and Matt Goodall and I all contributed parts of what make it awesome, along with the art and layout team. It’s not just about having certain chromosomes; it’s about mastering the rules and honing your craft and being professional and making stuff that rocks. But it is important to remember that there are lots of talented women out there in our hobby, and they are well able to make great gaming products.Whether you’re a publisher or a customer, this is a great resource that hasn’t always been well tapped. Legendary Games has several projects pending out there as yet unannounced with some fantastic females involved, and I am sure you are going to love these Legendary Ladies and the stuff they are bringing to the table.

With that, I think I’ll drop a preview for an entire brand-new series of products we have never mentioned before, but just might cross over into ALL of our existing product lines. A picture is worth a thousand words, but I wonder what the Mystic Seer will see there for you. What relationship might this picture have to the final product?

Totally Righteous… NOT!

Legendary Games is proud to bring you the latest and most terrifying chapter in our series of Righteous Crusade Adventure Path Plug-Ins; behold, UNRIGHTEOUS VILLAINS!

This book contains eight despicable, wicked, cruel, and malevolent menaces brought to you by the diabolical imaginings of Todd Stewart, Nicolas Logue, Clinton J. Boomer, and Alistair Rigg, each is worse than the last no matter which order you read them! Every one comes complete with a richly detailed personality, a history of corruption and damnation, and most importantly adventure hooks to engage them with your PCs. A villain without a plan, no matter how interesting he may be to the GM, is just another monster. These villains will be giving your PCs nightmares long before they ever meet them and long after the PCs think they’ve defeated them!

MYTHIC MARCH MANIA Update #2: A stroke of Genius!

From the very earliest mythic products Legendary Games produced, we always included supplemental rules for characters on top of the core content of those products. Sometimes these were new rule concepts like demon possession or mythic fungal hazards in the Mythic Monsters line, but just as often we included mythic feats and path abilities in products like Mythic Magic: Core Spells and Mythic Monsters: Mounts. More recently, we kicked off our weekly series of Mythic Minis, 1000+ words of brand-new or converted mythic content coming every week for just a buck, bringing path abilities for every mythic path and collections of feats around all manner of themes.

When we started developing our plan for this mythic Kickstarter, though, we knew we wanted to do more. We wanted to create a book that would do for feats, path abilities, class abilities, and the like what our Mythic Magic book would do for spells. We wanted conversions for EVERY feat in the core Paizo rules, plus brand-new mythic feats and abilities of our own, but for a product of this size we wanted a partner that had the expertise to help us knock this out of the park. We needed someone with talent. We needed someone with experience. We needed someone… with Genius.

One company could do an awesome job on its own, sure, but combine the powers of two and that is where you make it truly LEGENDARY, a work of true Genius. Since I took over running Legendary Games in 2012, Owen Stephens has always been free with advice, as a sounding board for ideas, and even just to share a laugh. He’s somebody I’ve worked with as a freelancer on a number of Pathfinder hardcovers and I’ve always admired his talents, but the synergy really kicked up a notch when Owen and company released  Mythic Options: The Missing Core Feats and followed it up with a collection of Bullet Points exploring mythic feats and mythic versions of class features. Like with Kobold Press and Mythic Magic, this seemed like a fantastic potential alliance, so I chatted up Owen about the idea, and after some very enthusiastic conversations I am delighted to announce that we will also be partnering in this Mythic March Mania Kickstarter with the great and powerful Owen Stephens and the crew at ROGUE GENIUS GAMES! We will be releasing the Mythic Manual jointly under both logos, including not only conversions of all the great Paizo feats and class abilities from every core hardback and those from other products besides, but also a broad array of brand-new mythic feats, path abilities, and supporting rules for mythic characters of every kind!

With all of these books, how far we get towards those goals depend on you. If the Kickstarter goes as expected, this will be the definitive tome of the building blocks of mythic characters. If you even think about using the mythic rules in your campaign, this is it with a bullet.

Mythic Manual. Legendary and Rogue Genius. That’s just book TWO. Wait until tomorrow!

Something for every mythic character awaits within

The waiting is over. Legendary Games is proud to announce our next KICKSTARTER PROJECT! We welcome you to MYTHIC MARCH MANIA, slated to begin one month from today, March 24th, and run through the end of April. Legendary Games has already established itself as your go-to source for mythic content for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, bringing you fantastic conversions and creations from the same minds that helped create the mythic rules in the first place, and we have been planning something big. How big? If this Kickstarter goes as well as we think it will, we are prepared to bring you not one magnificent mythic hardcover compendium, nor even two titanic tomes of mythic mania. No, our plan is to thrill you with THREE MYTHIC HARDCOVERS!

This is an ambitious project, much bigger than our last Kickstarter to produce the beautiful Gothic Campaign Compendium, which has already been sent in PDF form to our backers and whose print version as we speak is sailing across the sea, ready to ship to our print backers and to go on sale to everyone. We certainly learned a great deal about running a Kickstarter and we received a lot of terrific feedback from the community that will be put to good use this time around. We think Legendary Games’ track record speaks for itself with our line of Mythic Plug-Ins, alongside our other terrific product lines, but for something this big we decided to get a little help from our friends. All this week we’ll be offering updates and unveiling the further details of our plan. Follow along with updates here on our website as well as on our Facebook page, on Twitter at @LegendaryGamesJ, on the Paizo messageboards, and on our new blog on d20pfsrd! This is gonna be awesome… no, make that LEGENDARY!

This monster is RIGGed!!!

And by rigged I mean unfair, and by unfair I mean deadly, and by deadly I mean “DEAR LORD IN HEAVEN WHAT IS THIS THING EATING MY CHARACTER?!?!?!?!” That’s exactly the kind of reaction you want when you bust out one of the creatures from our Mythic Monsters series on your unsuspecting players. Alistair Rigg, well known Down Under for his work with the Australian Pathfinder Society, also has a keen eye for detail and a great sense for the Pathfinder RPG, and he lent his aid to fellow Aussie Matt Goodall in creating our delightful adventure, Horns of the Hunted, and he went on from there to help with proofreading a number of our products. Sufficiently impressed with his talents, I invited him to join the team on the writing side as well, and Mythic Monsters: Abyssal represents the first fruits of his work in that regard. He created a number of the awful Abyssal horrors in this book, including the brand-new ylrygoi qlippoth, a savage demon-hunting hydra-scorpion-worm. Try saying that five times fast. Along with the magnificently bizarre illustration by Ivan Dixon, I thought you’d like to see some of the disgusting yet deadly special abilities the ylrygoi brings to the table!

Implant (Ex) A mythic ylyrgoi’s stingers contain eggs that it can inject into Medium or larger creatures when it strikes with a sting attack. The target can resist being implanted with a successful DC 24 Fortitude save. If the save is unsuccessful, the egg gestates and becomes a fetal shoggti qlippoth that begins consuming its host after the onset period. When the host is reduced to 0 Con, a shoggti bursts from the host’s body in a shower of viscera and gore, as much a transformation of the host body as a destruction of it. Creatures killed in this fashion can only be restored to life by miracle, wish, or similar magic. The egg or fetal shoggti can be cut free of the host’s body with a successful DC 25 Heal check, which takes 1 hour and deals 3d6 points of slashing damage to the host creature regardless of success or failure. Remove disease (or any similar effect; DC 24) also kills an implanted egg or fetal shoggti.
Ylyrgoi Egg: Infestation—injury; save Fort 24; onset 1 day; frequency 1/day; effect 1d4 Con damage until host dies, then a shoggti emerges. When the shoggti emerges from the host, it is stunned for 1 round. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Well, that does sound pretty awful. But, wait, it does WHAT?

Gestation Aura (Su) A mythic ylyrgoi’s aura accelerates diseases and biological infestations, including pregnancies. All such afflictions and conditions active within the mythic ylyrgoi’s 30-foot aura have the onset time reduced to 1 round and the frequency reduced to 1/minute. Impregnated creatures inside this aura gestate completely in 2d4 minutes. As a swift action once per round, a mythic ylyrgoi can expend one use of mythic power to accelerate the frequency of all diseases and biological infestations, and the gestation period of impregnated creatures by 1 minute. If the affliction is still during its onset period, the onset period automatically ends, and the creature immediately suffers the affliction’s effects. Saves made due to the mythic ylyrgoi’s gestation aura ability do not count toward curing a creature’s original affliction, nor do failures count when determining consecutive saves.

GM: *cackles evilly*

And isn’t that really what life’s all about?

This is what demons tell scary stories about.
